Most SA aroid mixes hold water for hours, starving roots of oxygen. ROOTLABS drains in seconds - giving roots the air and space they were always meant to have.
"Another successful repot. I feel like I need to repot them in see-through containers so I can watch them grow."
- Mia, ROOTLABS CustomerFrom Import to Thriving
Most collector plants arrive from import in compacted, airless growing media. Here's what a proper repot into ROOTLABS actually does - documented over 10 weeks.
Feb 7 · Day 0
Rare variegated Philodendron arrives wrapped in plastic with compacted growing media - standard for imports. Repot immediately.
Feb 7 · Day 0
Straight into ROOTLABS Aroid Mix. Chunky bark, LECA, and perlite create the open, draining structure roots need to explore immediately.
Apr · Week 10
10 weeks in. Thick, healthy roots are visible through the clear pot, snaking the full perimeter. No rot. No stagnation. Pure exploration.
Apr · Week 10
Same plant. Strong stems, striking variegation, multiple new leaves. The roots drove every bit of this growth. Substrate was the difference.
Your collector plant deserves the same start.
Get the Pro BundleThe Import Reality
Nurseries and importers prioritise cheap, compact media that travels well. Not media that grows well. Here's what to do the moment your plant arrives.
Import Arrival
Dense, airless soil block. No drainage, no oxygen. Fine for shipping - terrible for growth. Repot immediately on arrival.
Remove This
Compact, wet, anaerobic. This is root rot in slow motion. Roots can't explore, can't breathe. Your plant is already struggling.
ROOTLABS
Chunky bark, LECA and perlite. Instant drainage. Immediate airflow. Roots can explore from day one. This is the difference.

The Problem Nobody Talks About
Collectors across SA are doing everything right - the right light, the right watering schedule, the right fertiliser. And still their plants sit stagnant, yellowing, struggling. Here's why.
Cheap potting bark and perlite compacts within weeks. Water sits in the mix long after watering - creating the exact anaerobic conditions that rot roots from the inside out.
Tropical aroids evolved clinging to tree bark in open air. They need oxygen at the root zone at all times. Dense, soggy media suffocates them - no matter how carefully you water.
By the time you see yellowing leaves or mushy stems, 60–80% of the root system is already gone. Most collectors blame their watering. The real culprit is the soil that never gave the roots a chance.
The SA market sells commodity mix and calls it "aroid mix."
ROOTLABS was engineered to fix that - from the ground up.
Every component ratio, every particle size, every formula was designed around one thing: keeping your roots healthy, oxygenated, and growing.
Live Demo - Watch It Yourself
Watch water pass through ROOTLABS Aroid Mix versus typical SA potting mix side by side. The difference is immediate - and it's exactly why one mix grows thriving roots while the other quietly kills them.
The Problem
The shelves are full of products calling themselves "aroid mix." Most of them are lying to your plants.
Most "Aroid Mixes" on the Market
What you're probably using right now
Coco coir is a bulk filler - it's cheap, it looks fine in the bag, and it destroys aroid roots. It holds moisture long after the plant is done drinking, creating the perfect anaerobic environment for root rot to thrive.
Most mixes start off okay but compact into a solid brick within months. Roots get strangled, oxygen disappears, and your plant slowly suffocates from the ground up.
By the time you see yellowing leaves or mushy stems, the roots have been rotting for weeks. The soggy mix is holding the moisture that's killing your plant while looking perfectly normal on the surface.
Aroids are epiphytes - in nature, their roots cling to bark and breathe freely in open air. Standard mixes were engineered for soil-dwelling plants. They're the wrong tool for the job entirely.
ROOTLABS - Engineered Substrate
Built from the root up, not the shelf up
No coco coir, no peat, no bulk filler. Every component is selected for a specific structural or drainage purpose. If it doesn't earn its place, it's not in the bag.
Coarse bark, perlite, and mineral components create a mix that stays open and airy for 2+ years. Your roots have room to breathe and grow fast.
When water drains in seconds and oxygen reaches every root, the anaerobic conditions that cause rot simply cannot form. The fix is in the physics.
We studied how aroids actually grow in nature and reverse-engineered that environment into a bag. The result feels nothing like potting soil - because it isn't.
The Science
Every ingredient, every particle size, every ratio - calculated to give your plant's root system exactly what it needs.
Chunky particle matrix ensures zero waterlogging. Water drains in seconds, not hours.
Macro air pockets deliver oxygen to root tips - accelerating growth and eliminating anaerobic zones.
Unlike peat, our mineral and bark components hold structural integrity season after season.
Formulated and packed locally. Built for our climate, our water, our plants.

ROOTLABS vs PON
FAQ
Is this similar to PON?
Yes - comparable in function, but locally developed and specifically balanced for South African growing conditions using LECA, zeolite, and perlite.
Can I use it exactly like PON?
Yes - semi-hydro systems, self-watering pots, and passive hydro setups. You may need to slightly adjust watering frequency depending on your environment.
Do I need to add fertiliser?
Yes. This is an inorganic substrate - it contains no nutrients. Use a liquid fertiliser as part of your watering routine. We recommend EHG.
Can I reuse it?
Absolutely. Mineral Grow Mix does not break down. With proper rinsing and cleaning it can be reused multiple times - one of its biggest advantages.
